About Fishing Rods
Fishing rods are tools used primarily for fishing, though also as part of some recipes. They can be crafted by the player, collected from various places or bought from villagers. To use a rod, the player must cast it towards a water source block, at which point it will be possible to reel in a fish (treasure or junk) when the float dips below the surface of the water.
A successful catch removes one durability from the rod’s durability total. On the Java Edition a rod can make 64 catches and on Bedrock it can make 384. When a rod loses all of its durability, it breaks permanently.
Collecting Fishing Rods
Rods can be easily crafted using three sticks and two string, and it is possible to repair two damaged rods by crafting a pair together, receiving a 5% durability bonus for doing so.
Enchanted fishing rods can be obtained as treasure items when fishing. Unenchanted rods can be collected as a junk item. Both rods will be partially worn and require repair to reach full durability.
It is possible to trade with Journeyman-level fisherman villager to buy a rod. These come with an enchantment and cost six emeralds each.
Rods also generate as loot in underwater ruins, most commonly found in small ruins chests, but also in big ruins chests.
Rod Enchantments
Four enchantments can be applied to a fishing rod:
Unbreaking – Lowers the durability cost per use.
Mending – Uses collected experience points to restore durability.
Lure – Decreases the amount of time it takes for a bite to happen by around five seconds per level.
Luck of the Sea – Increases the chance of catching treasure while reducing the amount of junk and fish you catch.
Fishing Rod Recipes
You can craft a fishing rod with either a carrot or a fungus to make a carrot on a stick or a fungus on a stick. The former are used to control saddled pigs while riding on their backs, and the latter can be used to control saddled striders. If you use the alternative use function while riding, the item on a stick will provide a short speed boost at the cost of several durability.
If a carrot or a fungus on a stick reach zero durability, they will transform into a regular fishing rod.
Fishing Rod Hints and Secrets
- You can only carry one rod per inventory slot.
- If you hook a mob, minecart, bot or armour stand using a fishing rod, you can reel it in at the cost of 3-5 durability, depending on the thing being reeled in.
- Rods can be placed in furnaces as fuel, smelting 1.5 items.
- Attempting to hook a villager will reduce your popularity and may attract the ire of any nearby iron golems, who will interpret it as an attack.
- You can cast the hook of a fishing rod onto wooden or weighted pressure plated to activate them.
